The Topic Debate:

“The Arab environment: climate change and the impact of climate change on Arab countries”

Climate change

Anthropogenic climate change is one of the most serious environmental challenges facing the world today. The global climate is already shifting, and according to the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the warming trend that has been observed during the past 50 years may largely be ascribed to human activity. A rise in the global mean temperature may affect precipitation patterns and wind systems, shift climate zones and raise the level of the oceans. Changes of this magnitude could have a tremendous impact on natural ecosystems and human society alike.

A recent report analyses the Arab response to the urgent need for adaptation measures, and uses the latest research findings to describe the vulnerabilities of natural and human systems in the Arab world to climate change and the impacts on different sectors. In an attempt to help shape adequate policies, the report discusses options for a post-Kyoto regime and outlines the state of international negotiations in this regard. Specifically, the report looks at:

o public opinion and climate change

o GHC emissions – mitigation efforts in Arab countries

o the results of remote sensing study of some impacts of global warming on

o the Arab region

o impact of climate change on coastal areas, food production, fresh water,

o human health, ecosystems and biodiversity, infrastructure, tourism

o international negotiations for a post-Kyoto regime

o interrelation between climate change and trade negotiations
